Stop the ideology, start the future: for an European Union that works for all European peoples
Budapest, June 2, 2025 – “At the CPAC in Budapest, a key international Convention for Conservatives, I reaffirmed a deeply held belief: now more than ever, we need a strong, cohesive, and pragmatic European Union. The challenges ahead – economic, geopolitical, and social – cannot be effectively addressed by individual states. Only genuine European collaboration can secure a safe and prosperous future.
However, the Europe we envision is not the one we have today, led by ideological policies that are undermining our Continent’s competitiveness. I’m talking about rigid, unrealistic measures like the ideological Green Deal, the ban on combustion engines without viable alternatives, and the imposition of constraints and quotas penalizing our businesses while non-European competitors, especially China, operate without such rules.
This isn’t environmentalism or progress; it’s a dogmatic approach that jeopardizes strategic sectors, weakens our industries, and unravels Europe’s productive fabrics. We must stop this drift, which risks becoming an economic and cultural suicide.
We believe in a united Europe, but one rooted in respect for national identities, cultural distinctiveness, and stories. Europe’s true strength lies in its diversity, in the richness of its traditions, and in the deep roots that connect every European people to their history.
Defending our values, our identity, and the freedom of each Nation to contribute authentically to the European project is our mission. A stronger, freer, and truer European Union is possible – but only if we break free from ideological frameworks that neither reflect the will of our citizens nor meet the needs of our productive system,” said Hon. Simone Billi, Lega Group Leader in the Foreign Affairs Committee and President of the Committee for Italians Abroad.
